(thanks to wikipedia)The People's Republic of China has administrative control over 22 provinces; the government of the People's Republic of China considers Taiwan to be its 23rd province. Apart from provinces there are 5 autonomous regions containing concentrations of several minorities; 4 municipalities for China's largest cities and 2 Special Administrative Regions (SAR) governed by the PRC.
The 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities can be collectively referred to as " mainland China ", a term which usually excludes Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
